We haven’t used that brand, but if it’s available to you and you can’t get the other brand, then it’s definitely worth a shot!

Hi Jennifer, the flavors of miso paste and ground bean sauce are very different! If it’s a smaller element in a recipe with lots of other seasonings, it might work? But we’ve never tried it.

Hmmm I should find the images on my hard drive and re-export at a higher resolution! Will add that to my to-do list!

The image is being rendered at too low a resolution for me to be able to read the ingredients.

Hi jessica, you could potentially sub tian mian jiang, which is fermented wheat flour paste: https://thewoksoflife.com/sweet-bean-sauce-tian-mian-jiang/. Some brands do have soy, so be sure to check the ingredients.

I’ve started researching and shopping for ingredients, but the problem is I’m really sensitive to soy. I know what to do for every ingredient besides this one. (I love these pages on the ingredients – so helpful.) I don’t want to just leave it out my first time trying the recipe. Any recommendations? I don’t have any other dietary restrictions.

Hi Jim, Yes, I think the brown bean sauce probably refers to ground bean sauce!

There are a number of recipes calling for “brown bean sauce”. I know it’s not the same as black bean sauce because the recipes call them out separately. Is brown bean sauce the same as ground bean sauce?
