Haven’t tried recipe yet, but seeing as how I love, love, LOVE tofu, it’s just a matter of time really. Keep up the most excellent work – please!

In reply to Jane.

OK, I am officially dialing back and recalling my criticism of the marinade situation to say that this is the most absolutely, delightfully great tofu. I wish I could give this 10 stars. It is seriously so good. It was worth all the stress over the thick marinade. Kaitlin, you might want to warn readers that this marinade will be very pasty indeed, and akin to spreading a nut butter on your tofu.
However, the results are worth it. Best tofu ever! Keep the tofu recipes coming!

It was like trying to spread almond butter around with these delicate pieces of tofu. I kept wishing that I could thin the marinade with more oil or maybe some water, but I have persisted, since I prefer to follow a recipe as written the first time. This sounds terrific, but this pasty “marinade” is very awkward to work with. I’ll spread it around as best as I can, and then get back to rate the recipe.

Hi Katie, fantastic! It will affect it a little bit but only slightly. The iron and protein should be about the same.

Made this for a snack today! Loved it! Just curious, does the nutrition get affected at all if I leave out the yeast? Is it still the same iron and protein content without it?
I didn’t have the nutritional yeast so just added a little extra garlic. Going to be a staple at our house now!

Hi Laura, hmm I’m not sure there’s a real equivalent that would get you the crunch factor. You could try fermented white tofu, but it’s not easier to procure than nutritional yeast necessarily. Nutritional yeast is also not a strictly Asian ingredient, it’s more vegetarian/vegan than anything else. Give it a try as written and see how you feel about it! From there you’ll have a much better sense of what to substitute from what you have in your pantry. :)

How would you replace the nutritional yeast in the recipe yet keeping it in the “asian” family of tastes? I am not sure what chicken powder so a description of that might help. thanks in advance. I love my daily email of recipes to try.

Hahah I’ve done the same many times, Gwendolyn! The idea of omitting the spices is smart! Thanks for the kind words!
